Reiki. “It’s all a load of s**t”, “It’s just spiritual fluff”, “How can someone hovering their hands over anyone do anything?!” Yeah, I’ve heard them all. And my response is always the same, feeling is believing and, EVERYTHING is energy. Everything measured down to its smallest component is a macrocosm of cells vibrating at a certain frequency, creating ripples, moving, shifting, transforming.
Just because energy isn’t tangible, doesn’t mean we can’t feel it and move it. You’d certainly feel it if you stuck your finger on a live wire, even though you can’t see the current of energy flowing.

For decades, society has disputed whether Reiki Energy Healing actually has any legs to stand on, per se. Fortunately, over the last 20 years or so, studies have shown that Reiki has profound healing effects and works holistically on the receiver, physically, emotionally, mentally, energetically, and spiritually. It assists with pain relief, reduces stress and anxiety, induces relaxation, releases stuck energy and emotional blockages, naturally speeds up any healing process, and balances the subtle energy body.
Sometimes our human minds want to understand everything and logically put the pieces together so that it “makes sense”. Our egos want to know. We want to have control over the things we cannot see because it helps us to feel safer in a world full of uncertainty. I understand. When I started my journey with Reiki, I was initially quite skeptical of the whole thing. I had some of the same thoughts that I mentioned in the first line. And then, Reiki found me, like a tidal wave it came into my life, swept me up, turned me upside down, and inside out and catapulted me into a life I had no idea I was going to take (in a good way!); more on my personal journey another time.
For now, I’m here to debunk all ideas and theories you may have on Reiki and to make it accessible for even the non-believers out there.
How Western cultures can learn from Eastern philosophies
Reiki, originating in Japan in the early 1920s by Mikao Usui, literally translates as “life force energy”. It’s a form of energy work in which the Practitioner typically works as a channel/conduit to send the energy from Source, through their hands, directly onto and through the client. Predominately the facilitator works with gentle hands-on healing, or hands in the auric field of the body, over the main 7 chakras, which run from the base of the spine up to the crown of the head; the root chakra, the sacral, the solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye, and crown. The chakras or “wheels of energy”, govern our energy body, which also connects to all other pillars of our being.
In the Western world, we have separated mind from body. We have been taught to reach for the medication instead of the meditation. As humans, often living a busy and somewhat chaotic life, our nervous systems can be on overdrive, over-stimulated, and overwhelmed. If we don’t give ourselves the time and space to feel, release, and heal, emotions can be suppressed and held in the body. These trapped energies, or “samskaras”, as they are referred to in Indian philosophy, are mental impressions, and psychological imprints that eventually lead to dis-ease in the body, if they remain stuck.
We have forgotten, or not been taught in most cases, that everything in our system is connected, so when our physical body is in pain, it’s because there is disharmony in the body. Pain is the last sensation that we will receive when there is an emotional imbalance and this can surface within days, weeks, months or even years after a trauma or bad experience. A Reiki practitioner is simply helping to assist the client work through these energy blocks, by bringing them to the surface, moving and transforming the energy; breaking the “blockages” down on a cellular level, and clearing the way for new energy to emerge and flow in harmony. Re-balancing, re-charging, and re-aligning.
As the energy is transmitted with Reiki, it can affect the receiver in numerous ways…let’s look at how and why. Depending on what the client is going through in their life or how willing and open they are to receive, the effect can differ immeasurably. Some clients shift energy by physically jolting their body involuntarily, others can purge through tears which tend to arrive in waves. Some experience a deep sense of calm and grounding.
Others may even travel into past lives; receive spiritual messages and visions, or visitations from ancestors. Sometimes the effects are felt in the moment of receiving, others will feel the effects days, weeks, and months after receiving. From my own personal experiences I have also witnessed clients have huge awakenings and profound healing that have set them off on a new path, much more aligned with their higher callings in this life. Reiki, when tuned in by someone who really honors the sacredness of this work and that knows what they’re doing, is one of the most powerful healing modalities I am humbled to use and to teach. Some of the transformations I have witnessed over the years have even blown my own beliefs out of the water. Reiki is pure light. It is an infinite source of energy that is accessible for us to tune into if we have the courage to ask for it.
When one is attuned into the Reiki lineage, it’s like receiving a beautiful blessing from above and is done as a short and sacred ritual that stays with you for life. It really is a gift. To be able to tune into this infinite source, to be able to give yourself hands-on healing, is truly one of the greatest things you can do for yourself. It allows you to open up as a channel to receive the light to move through you and I have no doubt it will ignite any soul that is ready to receive it.
Why I believe and why I teach
I believe, simply because of the transformation I have personally had, and for all the healing and awakenings I have seen in clients and students worldwide. It’s a deep faith and knowing, a trust that I can not explain. When I open myself up as a Channel, I connect to all my Guides, my Ancestors, and to nature. It’s a deep remembering that we are never alone in this life.
I teach because it is such a beautiful gift and is helping so many people. If just 1 person comes for an attunement into the lineage of this work and then goes into their own self-healing journey, they are changing their own frequency that becomes a transmission and light for others. If they then share with friends and family, the ripple effect has already impacted many people’s lives. If I teach 10, who then share with 10 others, 100 people receive, and so on. We are all creating positive ripples.
Ultimately it’s about us surrendering to a force greater than our own being human. It’s about healing on all levels. If you are reading this and it resonates with something in your soul, maybe it’s something for you too.
