The skill of self confidence | Dr. Ivan Joseph | TEDxRyersonU

As the Athletic Director and head coach of the Varsity Soccer team at Ryerson University, Dr. Joseph is often asked what skills he is searching for as a recruiter: is it speed? Strength? Agility? In Dr. Joseph's TEDx Talk, he explores self confidence and how it is not just the most important skill in athletics, but in our lives.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
I watched this last year and it motivated me to run a marathon. Now I’ve done 2 marathons in total and a bunch of other races. Got 3 marathons planned for next year. Believing in yourself is very important!!
Congratulations 🎉
proud of you
how do you take care of your knees? lol
woww well done dude
How is your marathons planning for this year ! I love to hear more
Easiest and fastest way to gain confidence is to do exactly what you are afraid of.

Strongly Agree 💯
@aimeexgallagher been 5 years, still waiting for that edit 🥹

This is the Ted Talk that changed my life. I remember listening to this Ted talk in school in 8th grade, now I’m 20 years old and i carry every single value that he talks about to this day.
We should Ted talk and chill
Oh wow! Rlly?! Great!
@Raima_ Is_Lovely im just finishing 8th grade
Oh my that’s good to know
Very proud!!!
There was a time my anxiety was so high that even going to the barber was suicide. Now im 19, living on my own, hunting for jobs and slowly talking to people, at the end of the year ill join university and pursue my dreams, wish me luck.
EDIT: Here’s an update asked by Mofe Adeyemi. I found a job in a corporation, it is really good and the people are amazing, I’m still trying to put effort into making relationships, it’s hard and tiring but I need to, I’m also learning a new language and studying business basics cause I want to be on my own.
EDIT 2: it got harder, I feel bad all the time.
EDIT 3: I somehow still feel bad, none of the things that I do seem to help me, I might be exaggerating I don`t know. Maybe it is the Northern European country I live in where I can`t socialize with people for strange reasons, there ain`t much to update about, but I wanted to make it as honest as possible, being young with no support whether from family or friends is not easy.
Do you have Instagram maybe we can talk bro. Also do you live in Sweden. I heard Swedes don’t like socializing.
Rome wasn’t built in a day. There is a beginning, middle, and end to everything. Take your time and you will heal.
Heyy, hope you’re doing better now 🙂 keep going no matter what cause you’re so strong!
My prayers are with you….. you will overcome all of your challenge and you will fulfill your dreams

Important points I picked up in this
– persistent practice makes perfect
– stop negative self-talk
– reinforcing positive behaviour through positive feedback
– live strong and don’t let other people drag you down

God loves you and takes care of you for the arrival of this message to you that God exists and that life is a test for every human being, and either he succeeds in it and enters the eternal paradise of eternity or fails with it and burns with the fire of the world first and then a permanent fire after death. Decide what to do first and finally, the world is very short compared to the days of God, so do not lose it while you are not right.
I never really liked a comment on YouTube before, but this is definitely the comment that I would press the like button.
You and i gonna achieve our dreams
In Jesus name, amen. 👑
You said it pal
yes, lets go
Amen❤️
thankyou vm 💛
My respect goes to any speaker who doesn’t use slides yet manage to speak to the souls of his listeners and change their lives forever… Thanks Dr. Ivan, you earned my respect.
self confidence :
– practice
– repetition
– after failure, still practice and repetition, and presistance
– get out there, do what you wanna do, and don’t except no
– stop the negative self talk. do it, self affirmation to ourselves : I am the captain of my ship, and the master of my faith
– praise the good, catch them when they’re good : good job! you did good!
– believe in ur self
architects are cool, I also noted
👍Thank you so much 🙏🏼
it’s i’m the captain of my ship and master of my fate ! **
btw thanks for the summary much appreciated
This ❗️
Thanks for listing this out, Good job!!! One correction, the actual quote is “I am the captain of my ship, and the master of my FATE”. It’s a quote from Invictus, by William Ernest Henley. It’s important, because the author of the quote is saying that he is in control of his destiny in life. His faith came from God; but the author was saying “Master of my FATE” fate, destiny, outcomes, etc
My takeaways:
1. Believe in you first
2. Practice the skill of being confident
3. Accept and embrace being different
My comment will probably get lost but whoever reads this.. You got this! Whatever you are going through will get better hang in there ✨❤️
needed this
Be confident that it will reach the people.
lol, its at the top
“No one will believe in you unless you do.” – This has been true in every big and crucial moments of life.
Nah. Plenty of people believe in me, but I don’t believe in myself.
@mediacenter man Then its good that those close to you believe in you in those moments that you didn’t
@mediacenter man That just proves that all that matters is you believing in yourself. Take that and run with it. Don’t overanalyze.
Right.
I wholeheartedly agree 💯
This is probably the big speech on TED Talks for me. Self Confidence is a big issue for me. Hearing this makes me a little bit confident. Thank you!
“Praise the positive behavior that we want to reinforce.” I say this all the freakin time. This is the TRUTH!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
To anyone reading this, you are an amazing person
The fact that you’re here watching this video means that you are already taking the first steps in building your confidence
Keep going, you are amazing. You deserve the world. Believe in yourself. Everything improves with confidence and I believe that you can increase your confidence. Good luck
Aw, thank you. 😊
Amen thankyou💕😭
Thank you so much💛
you’re so nice I know this comment was written 10 months ago but thank you and I hope you’re doing great
Thanks Alot…..
So glad to have come across this video! So moving and powerful. This has pushed me further to want to help people in this way. I never realised how powerful spontaneity is. Do you have any more videos? Well done Tony for making such a brave decision for yourself and not just the money!
I learned more in 13 minutes than I have over all those years back in high school . The counselor humiliated me in front of the whole class saying that I was not smart enough to go to college. It stayed with me for many years. By the way, I have 1 bachelor and 2 master degrees today.
Same thing happened to me but it was my math teacher.
Badass! Counselor should’ve been fired. Sounds awful, yet I’m pleased that it was humiliation rather than shame. Shame –an internal belief that one isn’t enough. Humiliation–wrongly accused; falsely attriubuted from others. That counselor — what s/he said, says more about her/ him than you 100% You go Sara!!!
@zillaboop BAM! 💥💣
I don’t know what there is a line through that. That is my text.
Congrats Sara! Those rubbish teachers and many times relatives are a source of failure to all those around them. So glad you freed yourself from those shackles, it is a prison for sure.
What a great message and powerful presentation. Confidence, the kind that is grounded and truly rooted, can transform your mindset, outlook, and self care in ways that can change your life (and hopefully the lives of others, too).
I had the privilege of learning from this man in 2008 right after he had led the Graceland University Men’s soccer team (Lamoni, IA) to a National Championship. I was taking my USSF “C” license at his University. Awesome coach, teacher and man.
Amazing talk, I remember watching this video while I was in high-school, didn’t understood much back then, but now that I look back at it I implemented a lot of things that were talked in this video without even knowing.
10 years later I’m still going back to this video which really changed my life and made me who I am today. At that time, me as a Brazillian still did not understand english, but I watched it many times, translating every word and it inspired me. 2 Years later, I became fluent in english and went to US to study Manufacturing Engineering there and then I came back to my home country. Today I’m a polyglot, I have a good job and the life I wished to have 10 years ago, which I was able to construct with the self confidence, motivation and a lot of effort videos and books like this tought me. I know Dr. Ivan will never read my comment, but I just want to say: THANK YOU !!! Regards from Brazil!! It’s awesome how a video posted can change lives many many miles away and for years!
